A study tour of the Diplomatic School students to the headquarters of EU institutions and international organizations in Strasbourg, Geneva and Brussels took place from May 8th to 18th.

The visit in Strasbourg started with a meeting with Arman Khachatryan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the Council of Europe, and the staff of the Mission, who spoke about the daily activities of the Armenian Mission and answered the students’ questions. On May 9th and 10th, the students visited the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and got acquainted with the activities of the institutions. The students also had the opportunity to attend a plenary session of the European Parliament.

On May 11th and 12th, the DS students paid a two-day visit to the UN Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. As part of the visit, the students met with the President of the Human Rights Council, the Permanent Observer of the United Nations University for Peace, with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The study tour started with a meeting with Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN and Ambassador to Switzerland, who introduced the programme of the meetings in Geneva.

The DS students had also the opportunity to tour the UN Office in Geneva, visit the UN library and the League of Nations archive, as well as the Museum of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In Geneva, the students of the Diplomatic School were also hosted at the Permanent Representation of Armenia to the UN and were introduced to its activities.

The visit to Geneva was organized through the joint efforts of the Diplomatic School, the Permanent Representation of Armenia to the United Nations in Geneva and the University of Peace.

From 15th to 17th of May, the Diplomatic School visited the main institutions of the EU in Brussels: the European Commission, the European External Action Service, the European Parliament and the Council. The talks were based on the knowledge gained at the Diplomatic School and the students also met with representatives working with Armenia and countries of the region. The briefings and the questions and answers sessions provided the students with an insider’s perspective of the decision-making processes in the EU.

In Brussels, the participants of the study tour also visited NATO headquarters, met with NATO officials, discussed NATO-Armenia relations and the challenges that the organization currently faces. The students also met with Arman Israelian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to NATO, and the Mission’s staff, who spoke about the activities of the Armenian Mission, new cooperation initiatives and answered the students’ questions.

The future diplomats were also hosted by Ambassador Anna Aghajanyan, Armenia’s envoy to the EU and Belgium, and the Mission’s staff, who briefed them on the work of Armenia’s Mission to the EU and Armenia’s Embassy to Belgium and answered questions raised by the students.

In Belgium, the participants of the study tour visited museums and a digital exhibition of Van Gogh’s paintings.
